Enhance service to the community by expanding a busy hospital Emergency Room with an improved layout that separates functions into two zones and upgrades all building systems.
To better serve the community, the New York Presbyterian Health System realized that it needed to replace its increasingly busy emergency department at its uptown hospital, the Allen Pavilion. The hospital selected SHCA to design a new and expanded emergency department inside the existing footprint of the first floor of the Allen Pavilion. Complex phasing and department relocations were implemented to create the required space and maintain current emergency department operations while the new emergency department was built.

The design separates the department into three zones: an entry/processing/office support area, a fast-track suite, and an Acute Patient Treatment space. The Acute Treatment area consists of 11 open treatment cubicles, a central open nurses' station, glazed observation room, and two Isolation/Gynecology rooms. A new Ambulance Entry, Resuscitation Room, Cast Room, and two-position holding area flank the nurses' station. As part of the 12,000 sq ft (1,115 sq m) project, all MEP systems were upgraded, ADA compliance assured, and natural light was introduced throughout the new emergency department with a new clerestory.
