Part of a larger urban redevelopment area in Downtown Brooklyn, Atlantic Terminal is a 12-story office tower rising above a retail base, designed by associated architects, Hardy Holtzman Pfeiffer.
The tower design addresses three primary relationships: the retail base, the adjacent Williamsburg Bank Tower, and the surrounding residential neighborhood. A horizontal band of glass at the fifth floor lifts the tower above the retail podium and allows the two architectural expressions of the tower and the base to coexist. SHCA developed an innovative terracotta tile exterior wall design sympathetic to the predominantly brick facades found nearby. A panellized system was invented to facilitate the expedited construction schedule.
Located atop a major commuter rail and subway hub, designers carefully coordinated the office tower structure and foundations through the retail space to bearing soil below, minimizing the impact to the transportation infrastructure.
