The 225,000 sq ft (20,900 sq m) Candler Building, located on 42nd Street in Times Square, was the tallest building north of 24th Street when completed in 1914. Willauer, Shape and Bready Architects designed this "Spanish Renaissance" 25-story office tower, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Suffering from years of neglect and misguided alterations, SHCA restored the building exterior, replaced its infrastructure and core, and rehabilitated the interior.
SHCA conceived innovative solutions to correct envelope deficiencies and upgrade the building that satisfied historic preservation requirements allowing the project to receive federal historic preservation tax credits. SHCA retained and restored historic components in good condition and replaced unsympathetic, missing and deteriorated elements while respecting the building's original appearance.
Designers relocated the elevator core to create a more efficient internal layout and replaced mechanical, plumbing and electrical systems. New ground floor lobbies were also introduced. In keeping with the revitalization of Times Square, significant signage was incorporated on the first three floors along 42nd Street.
