The University's vision for this building was 'to create and environment and culture that supports world-class research and learning, encourages innovation and collaboration whilst also supporting individual scholarship and teaching activities.'
This 2,100 sq m (22,604 sq ft) competition-winning project is a fine example of the collaborative thinking between our workplace and architectural teams to produce both an efficient and dynamic building.
Understanding user needs was essential to our design strategy and included workplace research, occupier surveys and a live pilot scheme to test new collaborative ways of working.
A 'combi-office' design enables academics to do concentrated solo work and to engage with researchers and students in the adjacent open-plan work settings. A 'research hub' houses all researchers in a 1000 sq m (10,760 sq ft) landscaped space containing a variety of work settings: personal and shared workstations, touchdown, study booths, meeting spaces and support spaces. This is a very different academic workplace solution and is much more flexible in accommodating regular population churn and a variety of academic visitors.
The £3m building now supports and enables scholarship, innovation, knowledge creation, social interaction and collaboration. Our post occupancy evaluation has revealed substantial increases in occupier satisfaction.
