Thoughtful phased rehabilitation work gradually moves the buildings towards a restored, historic appearance as funds permit.
Columbia University Facilities (CUF) owns and manages 170 commercial and residential buildings surrounding the Ivy League institution's Morningside Heights campus. In 2002, SHCA began a long-term collaboration with CUF to preserve and restore its collection of buildings, designed in the early 20th C. by New York City's preeminent residential architects. Work includes building assessments, preparation of repair documents, and construction administration.

SHCA has performed exterior surveys of over 100 buildings and prepared construction documents to correct disrepair or potentially dangerous conditions. Work includes roofing and facade assessments focusing on repairing damaged masonry elements in keeping with the historic character of the buildings. To date SHCA has completed faade rehabilitation of 53 buildings. The program's goal is to make the building envelopes safe and water-tight. However, as funds permit SHCA's team has restored missing architectural features at areas of collateral work.

In addition, designs have been prepared for the restoration of several ornate lobbies. ADA-compliant access has also been designed for three buildings in a discreet, compatible manner. SHCA recently began facade restoration work on the main campus core of this McKim, Meade & White collection of buildings.
