SHCA developed the master plan and designed four innovative new facilities for the New York City Fire Department Training Academy on Randall's Island. The 73,000 sq ft (6,780 sq m) project includes a classroom building, a Field House, a Subway Simulator and a "Burn Building."
The Field House is the first structure of its kind in the US. The building simulates emergency conditions without using live fire or water, instead emphasizing the importance of search, rescue and escape. A sophisticated observation room permits instructors to monitor training sessions.
The "Burn Building" grew out of a change in training methodology, which now uses computer-controlled fires to help to re-create scenarios. Thanks to SHCA's flexible design, layouts can be changed to simulate different types of buildings.
The Subway Simulator building utilizes actual New York City Transit subway cars to simulate emergency conditions to train for search, rescue and escape.
SHCA had been engaged in the design project prior to September 11, 2001. Subsequently, the number of FDNY recruits to be trained doubled, resulting in a fast-track schedule.
