Design a technologically advanced, 'green' community school that maintains the historic fabric of the existing building.
SHCA designed the new facility, which serves 430 students in pre-K through fifth grade, on the site of an existing school. The main goal was to provide a technologically advanced and energy efficient community school that maintains the historic fabric of the existing building.

Hamilton Avenue School includes 60,000 sq ft (5,574 sq m) of new construction with partial restoration and reuse of an additional 15,500 sq ft (1,440 sq m). The design solution preserved the original façade while completely renovating the interior, ensuring all of the advantages of a newly constructed facility.

The original building's corner piece, including the formal entrance and signature cupola, serve as the design centerpiece. The introduction of a new building, thoughtfully scaled and articulated to respect its historic context, results in a landscaped courtyard, establishing a dialogue between the old and the new.

SHCA's design employs a best-practice approach from the site design to building materials and energy efficient systems. Notable features include sophisticated day-lighting strategies, natural ventilation systems, storm water reuse and environmentally friendly interior finishes, equivalent to a LEED Silver rating.
