The Bermuda Hospitals Board's brief was to design a building to support the highest quality of acute care with a strong Bermudian character for its new addition to the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital.
SHCA is the lead design consultant in the winning consortium, Paget Health Services, lead by Sir Robert McAlpine in the UK and BCM McAlpine in Bermuda.Currently the largest and most complex project in Bermuda, the PPP bid required the highest international standards in excellence of design, construction and operation. The design retains the Hospital's Bermudian ethos and the sense of “ownership” by the people of Bermuda by combining the experience and resources of local commercial and industrial communities with British, Canadian and American partners.

The new building is in harmony with the site and surroundings while achieving high sustainability levels and providing a therapeutic environment for patients alongside exemplary working conditions for hospital staff. All levels of the building benefit from a central four storey atrium with skylights creating a naturally lit volume around which the inpatient bedroom floors are arranged. This has allowed inpatient floors to be subdivided into “neighbourhoods”. The atrium also serves as a landmark to enhance patient way finding. The ground floor contains Surgical Reception, Waiting area and Stage 3 Recovery. The lower level Diagnostic and Treatment care areas are carefully integrated with the floors above. The primary corridors on these deep plan floors enjoy glazed ends with visibility of the unique Bermudian environment and natural light to all patient zones.

The facade concept for the building has been developed using local architectural visual context and is further enhanced by the selective use of strong colour, a feature popular on Bermuda.
