SHCA transformed an existing 290,000 sq. ft. (26,940 sq. m.) warehouse into the Nassau County Public Safety Center (NCPSC), home to county offices, conference rooms, police and fire call center, and Haz/Mat and bomb squad. SHCA developed the project in phases to accommodate the adaptive reuse of the current space while it remained in operation.
As the existing structure was too small for the program, a new 90,000 sq. ft. (8,361 sq. m.) second floor will be constructed within the building to house the emergency call center. Original foundations and columns will be structurally upgraded to accommodate these changes, and the latest AV, IT and redundant electro-mechanical systems installed. The architectural design objective was to transform the bland shell into a facility with a distinctive civic presence. A varied materials palette that includes channel glass curtain wall and textured terra cotta panels articulates the existing volumes, helps identify the egress and access points and emphasizes the overall horizontality of the building. Working with a limited budget, the design aesthetically prioritizes the building envelope by zoning from most public to least visible.
