SHCA signs up to the UK 10:10 sustainability initiative

SHCA has signed up to the UK 10:10 sustainability initiative, one of the first 1000 companies to do so. The objective is to reduce the company's carbon footprint by 10% during 2010. If every enterprise and individual in Britain were to do the same, it would reduce the UK's carbon footprint by 55 million tonnes in a year.

Robert Fry, Managing Director Europe, says: "This is a great initiative that fits in well with SHCA's ethos of simple durable solutions designed to deal with problems at their source. It will send a signal that we are addressing the issue of global warming responsibly."

SHCA has already reduced its carbon footprint by around 20% over the last three years but we believe the further 10:10 target is achievable. For more information about the initiative and to join up see: http://www.1010uk.org/

    SHCA in RIBA Exhibition

A Private View was held at the RIBA on Tuesday 8 September for the RIBA's travelling exhibition on higher education, called Re-Solution. The exhibition is a snapshot of the "excellent work being carried out in higher education" and the projects were selected for their "academic and building innovation" in "refreshing our university estates". Two SHCA projects, The Open University's Jennie Lee Building and the Centre for Collaborative Research at Loughborough University, were selected for inclusion along with about 20 other UK projects from a total 120 entries. Each project is displayed on an A2 board with photos, diagrams and a description of the design approach. The evening was well attended, including some of our current university clients, with an introductory talk given by Ian Caldwell of Kings College London, chair of the Higher Education Design Quality Forum. The exhibition was initially launched at the AUDE (Association of University Directors of Estate) conference in Cardiff prior to coming to London and will then travel further around the UK.

James Walker, an Architectural Assistant in our London office is sponsored by SHCA in his postgraduate studies at the University of Greenwich. He has been asked by The 20th Century Society to exhibit his university project proposals at the RIBA alongside photography from Ioana Marinesu and a documentary film by Martin Ginestie. A small number of other diploma students have also been invited to display their works as part of the 20th Century Society's pledge "to keep up efforts to save Robin Hood Gardens from demolition with the launch of a new exhibition at the RIBA." Jon Wright, caseworker at The 20th Century Society (which, in collaboration with Building Design Magazine, has led the campaign to rescue Robin Hood Gardens, an estate earmarked by the Tower Hamlets Council for demolition) said " the exhibition was the start of a new strategy following the Government's decision to make the estate immune from listing for five years." The exhibition, Robin Hood Gardens Re-vision, will run from 4th July to 26th August with the launch evening on the 21st July.
