19.10.2009SHCA signs up to the UK 10:10 sustainability initiativeSHCA has signed up to the UK 10:10 sustainability initiative, one of the first 1000 companies to do so. The objective is to reduce the company's carbon footprint by 10% during 2010. If every enterprise and individual in Britain were to do the same, it would reduce the UK's carbon footprint by 55 million tonnes in a year.
Robert Fry, Managing Director Europe, says: "This is a great initiative that fits in well with SHCA's ethos of simple durable solutions designed to deal with problems at their source. It will send a signal that we are addressing the issue of global warming responsibly."
SHCA has already reduced its carbon footprint by around 20% over the last three years but we believe the further 10:10 target is achievable. For more information about the initiative and to join up see: http://www.1010uk.org/ -

17.09.2009SHCA in RIBA ExhibitionA Private View was held at the RIBA on Tuesday 8 September for the RIBA's travelling exhibition on higher education, called Re-Solution. The exhibition is a snapshot of the "excellent work being carried out in higher education" and the projects were selected for their "academic and building innovation" in "refreshing our university estates". Two SHCA projects, The Open University's Jennie Lee Building and the Centre for Collaborative Research at Loughborough University, were selected for inclusion along with about 20 other UK projects from a total 120 entries. Each project is displayed on an A2 board with photos, diagrams and a description of the design approach. The evening was well attended, including some of our current university clients, with an introductory talk given by Ian Caldwell of Kings College London, chair of the Higher Education Design Quality Forum. The exhibition was initially launched at the AUDE (Association of University Directors of Estate) conference in Cardiff prior to coming to London and will then travel further around the UK.
