Richard Seth Hayden, FAIA RIBA

Chairman
Since Richard Hayden became a partner in 1972, he has succeeded in broadening the firm's client base by opening offices in Washington DC, Miami, London, Istanbul Paris and Moscow. He has overseen the growth of the firm to more than 250 professionals and has expanded the practice to include healthcare design, historic preservation and education work.
Mr. Hayden served as Chief Restoration Architect for the Statue of Liberty and co-authored a book on the project. He is also a past vice-president of the New York Chapter of the AIA, a member of the Board of Directors of the New York Historical Society and a Trustee of Syracuse University.
He has served on a number of design juries and is a registered architect in both the United States and the United Kingdom. Mr. Hayden earned a Bachelor of Architecture from Syracuse University's School of Architecture and holds an Honorary Doctor of Fine Arts from Hamilton College. He is a member of SHCA's Executive Committee.

Richard A. Carlson, FIIDA

Principal
Richard A. Carlson, traces his expertise in designing corporate facilities to years of experience. He directed the design of such projects as the American Express Company, IBM, Dow Jones & Company, Prudential-Bache Securities, and the Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company in Milwaukee. He also supervised design work for the law offices of Coudert Brothers, Milbank Tweed Hadley & McCloy, Fried, Frank, Harris and Shriver, and Chadbourne Park in New York and Steel Hector & Davis in West Palm Beach, FL.
A Fellow of the Institute of Business Designers (IBD), he served two terms as President of the New York Chapter. He received the Ron Wallin Distinguished Merit Award from IDB and was inducted into Interior Design Magazine's Hall of Fame.
Mr. Carlson joined SHCA in 1968 and became a principal in 1979. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Pratt Institute and went on to post-graduate studies in architecture and interiors at Lincoln College at Oxford University in England.

David Hughes graduated from Sheffield University and is an architect with broad experience in a range of building types. His career includes the restoration and redevelopment of Alexandra Palace in London and the technical co-ordination of several buildings within the prestigious Broadgate development for Rosehaugh Stanhope.
Joining SHCA in 1988, he managed both new build projects and fit-outs and is recognised for his experience and expertise - his opinion is often sought as an expert witness.
In 1993 he became the European Managing Director of the firm. He has managed our geographical expansion in Europe, adding offices in Paris, Istanbul, Sheffield and Moscow and expanded our design base to include healthcare, education, community care and residential design.
In 2004 David was appointed to the position of Chief Executive Officer for the firm. This latest role covers responsibility for both the US and European operations of the firm. The key aspect of the role is to ensure that appropriate strategic direction and sound business leadership is available to the firm as a whole.

Robert Strasser
Principal, CFO
Robert Strasser joined SHCA in 1989. He became Chief Financial Officer
in 1993, and a Partner in 1998.
He is a graduate of City University
of New York, a member of Financial Executives International and
past president of the New York City Chapter and a member of the
AIA CFO Large Firm Roundtable.

George Alexander, AIA RIBA

Principal
During a long career at SHCA, George Alexander has designed, produced and managed a wide range of projects involving architecture and interior design.
He brings to the firm the knowledge and experience gained through long standing relationships with such companies as Marsh & McLennan, ExxonMobil, J. P. Morgan Chase, and Merrill Lynch.
One of his more demanding projects was the fast track, 2.2 million square feet of office space for the American Express Headquarters in New York City.
Since becoming a Principal in 1985, Mr. Alexander has acted as Principal-in-Charge of the London, Stamford and New York offices.
He is presently involved with developing and maintaining relationships
with many of SHCA's multi-national clients as well as overseeing
the Washington DC office. He holds a Bachelor of Architecture
from Case Western Reserve University.

Joseph J. Aliotta, AIA

Principal
Joseph Aliotta serves as the US COO. His work includes a diverse
mix of commercial office, housing, institutional and public projects.
He has been instrumental in developing the firm's public sector
practice with a focus in educational and public safety projects.
He is Principal in Charge of several award-winning New York public
schools, PS 263 and PS 157, and public safety projects such as
NYC Office of Emergency Management and FDNY/EMS Dispatch Operations
Centers.
Other distinctive projects include: Harlem Park, Atlantic Terminal
Office Building, Brooklyn, NY, three MetroTech Center Office Buildings
(Brooklyn Union Gas Headquarters, FDNY Headquarters and 9 MetroTech
Center), Brooklyn, NY; Campiello Collection Residential Condominiums,
NY; Westfield Senior Citizens Housing, Westfield NJ and NYC HRA/MIS
Operations Center, Brooklyn, NY.
Mr Aliotta is a member of Society of Campus and University Planners (SCUP) and Council of Educational and Facilities Planners International (CEFPHI). He is a graduate of City College of New York with a Bachelor of Architecture and has a Diploma in Real Estate Investment and Analysis from New York University.

Tomas Alvarez
Principal
We are pleased to announce that Tomas Alvarez, AIA has joined the firm as a Design Principal from Cannon Design where he served as Design Principal from 2002-2007.
During his 20-year career, Tomas has focused on the design of corporate and commercial facilities, including a variety of office buildings and mixed-use projects in cities across the United States, Latin America, the Caribbean, Asia, Canada, and Europe. He spent fifteen years at Kohn Pedersen Fox where he was the Project Designer on a variety of office buildings and mixed-use projects such as Merrill Lynch Headquarters in Tokyo. The sensibility and innovation evident in his work have resulted in several winning design competition entries and a number of design awards issued by the American Institute of Architects.
Tomas holds a Bachelor of Architecture from Cornell University and a Master of Building Science Design from Columbia University, New York, NY. He is an affiliate of the US Green Building Council, a LEED ® Accredited Professional and a member of AIA Puerto Rico Chapter. He has also served as guest lecturer at Cornell University, Pratt Institute, NY Institute of Technology, NY and High School for the Arts.

Nick Birchall, Cantab

Nick Birchall graduated from Cambridge University and has over 20 years architectural experience on a range of building types for transportation, commercial office and cultural projects. Since joining SHCA in 1998, he has been the project leader for feasibility and urban design studies and several commercial office buildings. He has also established a comprehensive building appraisal methodology, and has advised a number of clients on complex redevelopment and refurbishment opportunities.
Nick was made a Principal in 2001. His recent projects include
the 30,000 sq m Westgate development in Amsterdam, the 8,000 sq
m HQ building for Prismant in Utrecht and the Centre for Collaborative Construction Research at Loughborough University. His ability to collaborate
and co-ordinate within a wide project team was recognised in our
prize-winning NATO HQ competition entry in Brussels and the award-winning
Open University Library in Milton Keynes, UK.

Steve Brown RIBA

Principal
Prior to joining SHCA, Steve’s signature projects included
Vauxhall Cross for MI6 in London; The Peak Tower, British Consulate
and Kowloon Station in Hong Kong; the Inchon Airport Transport
Interchange in South Korea, and the Beijing National Theatre
and Opera House.
He joined SHCA 2003 and is an experienced and talented architect
in the design of large scale, mixed-use schemes that incorporate
public realm, transport interchanges and infrastructure. He
has achieved planning consents for landmark and complex urban
design projects, often in sensitive locations such as World
Heritage sites, which require extensive consultation with statutory
bodies.
His design philosophy is the result of his analytical approach,
strategic thinking and creative talent. He favours extensive
site and context analysis and brings an urban design approach
to all his projects. He is a strong advocate for environmentally
and socially responsible design.
His recent projects include the Open University Jennie Lee Faculty
of Maths and Computing; City Academy London; Coventry City Academy;
Acibadem Hospital Masterplan, Kiev; Gongoren Mixed Use Development;
Turkey; various residential developments in Turkey and competition
entries for a Neurological Hospital, Shanghai; mixed-use development
in Tbilisi, Georgia and Peterborough Acute Hospital and Children's
Critical Care Unit PFI submission.
He is highly collaborative by nature and promotes a design workshop
approach to test and evaluate design solutions with his clients.
He is a great advocate of early 3D modelling and has a personal
interest in developing creative techniques and design tools
to better explore and communicate architectural design.

Suzanne Carlson

Principal
Suzanne Carlson is responsible for the management of all interior
design commissions for the US practice. Her experience with high
quality, complex design projects, has yielded a comprehensive
knowledge and understanding of how to fulfil our clients' requirements.
Regardless of size, her focus is on understanding the client business
objectives and the needs of the people who will be occupying the
completed facility. By building a strong sense of ownership in
the project team, Suzanne leads enthusiastic and dedicated project
teams. Suzanne believes that the strength of client relationships
are the foundation on which successful projects are built. She
prizes the fact that a great many of her clients are repeat commissions
with multiple projects credited to each.
Suzanne's projects range
from full Interior Design services for a high end 5th Avenue Residence;
300,000 sq ft for Milbank Tweed Hadley & McCloy LLP; 690,000 sq
ft for Federated Department Stores/Macy's and the programming
of a 2.2 million sq ft single tenant occupancy new base building
for a global investment bank.
Suzanne was made a Principal of
the firm in 2007.

James F. Case, AIA

Principal
As Principal of our Healthcare Design Practice, Mr. Case applies
his extensive experience as both a healthcare architect and a
hospital facilities administrator to the advancement of our healthcare
clients strategic goals.
His architectural background spans 24 years with the past 13 years
devoted exclusively to healthcare design 8 of those years
as Associate Director of Facilities Design for the North Shore
- LIJ Health System (NS-LIJHS). From this "client side"
experience Mr. Case brings the sensitivity and skill to understand
and negotiate the strategic planning, programming, regulatory,
budgeting, scheduling, project phasing, marketing and political
imperatives that healthcare user groups, administrators and owners
face. This unique background enables Mr. Case to incorporate into
the design process a deeper, first-hand understanding of our healthcare
client's methodologies and objectives.
In addition to his extensive healthcare design experience, Mr.
Case's overall design and project management background includes
published work at notable Manhattan firms on a variety of project
types. This well rounded perspective enables Mr. Case to integrate
the internationally acclaimed interior and architectural design
excellence of SHCAs non-healthcare sectors with our award
winning healthcare programming, planning and design expertise.
In this way we provide our healthcare clients the added value
of design solutions that take full advantage of SHCAs extensive
cross-market knowledge, design and technical talent. This approach
makes SHCA unique among healthcare design firms.

Robert Vail Cole, AIA

Principal
Robert Cole is an accomplished architect specialising in research, building evaluation, design, construction documentation, and construction management on historic structures. His 22 years of experience has been spent solely in restoration, rehabilitation and adaptive re-use of existing educational, institutional commercial, civic, religious and residential buildings. He is experienced in all phases of the design and construction process and is an expert in the evaluation and conservation of historically-significant structures.
Robert is also the primary author for SHCA's publication "Historic Preservation - Project Planning & Estimating". This 700+ page technical book is the first comprehensive guide on planning and cost estimating for historic preservation projects.
He has been responsible for overseeing the firm's restoration work at New York City's Hall of Records and Criminal Courts Building, the Internal Revenue Service Headquarters Building in Washington, DC, and the award-winning West Virginia State Capitol restoration. He was made a Principal of the firm in 2007.

Robert Fry, RIBA Int'l AIA

It is only an architectural mind that can quickly assimilate and make sense of a complex multitude of spatial and technical demands. By cultivating these dual attributes within the firm we have a strong reputation for defining, designing and delivering architecture and interiors of the highest quality."
Bob Fry received his Masters Degree from Sheffield University and spent 6 years with Milton Keynes Development Corporation designing new forms of housing, industrial, commercial and leisure buildings.
He joined SHCA in the mid 1980's as a Project Architect and worked on the 2m sq ft Spitalfields Redevelopment project comprising offices, retail, leisure and housing, integrated into the existing historical context of the site. His breadth of experience as an architect enables him to undertake the role of Project Director on new build, refurbishment and fit-out projects.
He was Project Director for our multi-award-winning Merrill Lynch
Financial Centre in London. This 830,000 sq ft project, on an
extraordinary and complex site, combined Master Planning, Architecture,
Refurbishment, Workplace Consulting and Interior Design. The project
received awards from the British Council for Offices, The Civic
Trust, The Office Agents' Society and the City Heritage Society.
In 2005, he was appointed to the role of Managing Director, Europe
and is responsible for the strategic direction of all European
offices.

Peter Gross AIA
Principal
Peter Gross is a Design Principal with over twenty-three years of professional experience. During this time, he has undertaken a wide variety of projects across the United States, Eastern Europe, and the Pacific Rim. His experience spans a broad spectrum of building types, including office, hotel, multi-family residential, transportation, civic, and infrastructure developments.
He is a registered architect in the State of New York and was formerly a Senior Associate Principal at Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates during which time he completed award-winning projects in a variety of urban environments and geographic regions.
He has been an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Columbia University's Graduate School of Architecture Planning and Preservation in New York City and a visiting critic at Syracuse University and Catholic University. He currently serves on the Advisory Board for ARCHI-TECH magazine. He graduated in 1984 with a Bachelor of Architecture degree from Syracuse University's School of Architecture.
His recent projects have been large scale projects in Russia and Kazakhstan for mixed use, residential, hotel, and office developments, including the Park City mixed use development and the Project Crystal high-rise residential project in Moscow. Additionally, he is currently engaged in commercial and headquarters office developments in New York and Miami.

Altan O. Gursel, Associate

Principal
Altan O. Gursel joined SHCA in 1980 and was made a Principal in
1992. For the past 14 years, Mr. Gursel led the design direction
of many of SHCA's high-rise and suburban low-rise architectural
projects around the world.
He has been actively responsible for
the establishment of SHCA's office in Turkey and for the
expansion of the firm's international reputation. For the
last several years his presence in the Turkish market has connected
him with new architectural opportunities in Russia.
Mr. Gursel has extensive experience in the public and private
sectors, including commercial, residential/hospitality, educational
and government work. He has received design excellence awards
for his work in the United States for Trump Tower in New York
and The Pierre condominiums in Sarasota, Florida and most recently,
for the 320 Park Avenue renovation for Mutual of America. He has
completed the Is Bank Towers and Tekfen Tower in Istanbul, Turkey
and presently a 70 story mixed-use tower is under construction
in Moscow.
He received Master and Bachelor of Science degrees from Istanbul Yildiz Technical University, and a Master of Science from the School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation at Columbia University.

Agatha Habjan

Principal
Agatha Habjan brings an architectural approach to the design of interior spaces. The range of style evident in her body of work is a product of her responsiveness to our clients, their programs and the "context" of the base buildings that she designs within. Some of her major projects include 600,000 sq ft. for Moody's Investor Services, 700,000 sq ft for Reuters America, 400,000 sq ft for Sotheby's and 450,000 sq ft for Brown Brothers Harriman.
Her award-winning designs have been featured in national publications for their creativity in matching the physical environment to business goals. Her work has been published in Grid, Metropolis, Interior Design Magazine, Contract, and Buildings Magazine, among others. She has won several Society of Registered Architects awards for her recent work.
Agatha is responsible for overseeing the design of all interior commissions for the US practice and was made a Principal of the firm on 2007.

John Jappen
AIA
Principal
John brings a wealth of experience managing large-scale, complex base building renovations and upgrades for corporate and commercial buildings, as well as for hospitality, institutional, and academic facilities. John's three decades of providing expert design services include significant experience with due diligence evaluations and condition assessments. Often his expertise is required when a building has reached the end of its lifespan and requires upgrading to extend its lifespan for another 30 or 40 years.
Much of John's distinguished professional career has focused on the tri-state area and his comprehensive knowledge of New York codes reflects this. In addition, he is an expert on national regulations and code, and ADA requirements. He has managed a number of major commissions in Moscow and has helped lead our expansion into the Russian architectural market.
John was made a Principal of the firm in 2007.

Bob Klein

Principal
With over 30 years of experience in both the United States and united Kingdom, Mr Klein is a frequent lecturer, writer and educator, including a course in Strategic Facilities Planning at Harvard's Graduate School of Design Executive Education Session. In the past five years he has completed major strategic facilities planning projects for Furtune 500 companies and major universities such as Barnard College.
As a licensed architect, he is committed to the philosophy that "great design" must first be grounded in programmatic requirements that reflect future business drivers and state-of-the-art ideas on workplace. His methodology results in a consensus-based decision making process and organisational management tools that bridge architecture, real estate and business.

Nick Pell

The design process must begin with a dialogue in order to understand a client's objectives, and to identify any opportunities that might exist to add value through design. The real challenge is to find a solution that supports business function, enhances profile and improves effectiveness - and still produces a terrific interior".
Nick Pell has 20 years experience designing interiors projects across Europe. He graduated from Kingston Polytechnic in 1983 and, following 5 years working in the UK and Italy, he joined SHCA in 1988.
He has established a reputation for designing creative interior solutions for a wide range of project types - hotels, restaurants, retail banks, leisure facilities and commercial office space, and he has been instrumental in leading the design direction of several award-winning projects.
His recent projects include a stunning refurbishment of a factory building into modern office space for Radius Holdings, executive space for The Royal Bank of Scotland Group and the BCO award-winning VISA HQ fit-out in London.
In 2002 he was made a Principal of Interior Design in our London Office. Nick focuses his talents on design leadership and creativity; he also contributes to industry think-tanks on the future of workplace and furniture design. He is passionate about design and totally committed to value-added design solutions that contribute to our clients' business success, brand and culture.

Julian Seward, Int'l Assoc. IIDA

Julian Seward graduated from Brighton Polytechnic School of Architecture and Interior Design. In his early career he worked with SOM Chicago and Fitch & Co., before co-founding Seward Glynn Marsh, then PTP Seward, where he directed the interior architecture for the award-winning Ministry of Defence's 1.25m sq ft complex in Abbeywood, Bristol.
He has designed and managed projects in the USA, Europe and Far East in the retail, healthcare, leisure, refurbishment and commercial office sectors.
Joining SHCA in 1998, he has led projects including Citibank's 540,000 sq ft European HQ; Lehman Brothers' 1m sq ft HQ and GlaxoSmithKline's highly-praised 650,000 sq ft Global HQ in London. He is widely acknowledged for his experience in early project strategy, client interface, and large project team co-ordination where tight budgets and aggressive timescales have been critical. Recently, he has been leading the integrated architecture and interior design for two major PFI hospital projects.
He was made a Principal in 2000, and became a Board Member in 2002; he is also responsible for the strategic direction of our Sheffield office.

Joseph Spina, AIA

Principal
With more than 20 years of experience practicing architecture, Mr. Spina serves the Mid-Atlantic Region as Principal-in-Charge from the Washington, DC Office. He has directed the design and renovation of more than 10 million square feet of governmental, industrial, and institutional facilities, as well as corporate office and luxury residential buildings. Mr. Spinas diverse portfolio includes master planning, new construction, historic reservation/restoration, design/build, and interior design, and facilities planning projects.

Scott Springer

Principal
Scott Springer is an accomplished architect and project Principal with extensive experience on a variety of notable projects in the USA and recently in the rapidly expanding Asian sector.
Scott's diverse project list includes the headquarters of the
Peter G. Peterson Institute for International Economics in Washington,
DC, an expansion of Six Penn Center in Philadelphia, and the addition
to the Pudong Shangri-La Hotel in Shanghai. His work on the Pudong
Shangri-La expansion led to three more projects for Shangri-La
in China, including the 2.7 million sq ft Kerry Centre Pudong
and 2.35 million sq ft Jing An Kerry Centre mixed use developments.
Scott is one of fifty international architects profiled in the
book "Persistence of Vision - Shanghai Architects in Dialogue".
His work has won numerous awards such as the AIA Washington Chapter "Award of Excellence for Extraordinary Achievement in Architecture". He is the recipient of a Stewardson Keefe LeBrun Award (1998) and an Arnold W. Brunner Grant (1999) and holds a Bachelor of Architecture from The Cooper Union.
As an architectural management Principal, Scott is responsible for the effective planning and management within our architectural discipline.

Sharon Turner

Principal, Workplace Consulting

Our objective, research based approach and a talented team of creative thinkers help our clients grasp the opportunities that new workplace strategies can create."
Sharon Turner has an extensive international career advising occupiers, developers and global organisations on space requirements and workplace strategies that enhance business performance. She joined SHCA in 1995 to develop Workplace Consulting as an integrated service within the firm and became a Principal in 2001.
She has travelled widely, consulting on projects in the UK, Europe, Russia, North America, Latin America and Africa. Her expertise in understanding the impact of corporate culture and business objectives on space and workplace design, has contributed to several award-winning projects including the Merrill Lynch Financial Centre and GlaxoSmithKline's Global Headquarters. Her recent projects include a global workplace strategy for ABN Amro and a European flexible workplace strategy for Shell.
Sharon plays a leadership role in assigments where strategic thinking and workplace change are major factors.
She has served as a British Council for Offices Awards Chairman, is an author and a regular conference speaker on the increasingly international debate about effective space use, workplace productivity and design.
