Sensitively repair and restore the facade, infrastructure and systems of an historic New York City public school.
New York City Public School 157, constructed in 1907, suffered from years of neglect. Misguided alterations and extensive failure of facade materials plagued the terra cotta, limestone, brick, and ornamental copper Gothic Revival-style structure.

Following the Secretary of the Interior's Standard for Rehabilitation, SHCA devised conventional and innovative solutions to correct the building envelope deficiencies. Historic materials were repaired or, when necessary, replaced in-kind. Deteriorated or missing features were accurately identified and replaced using original drawings and historic photographs.

SHCA concurrently developed a design for service infrastructure upgrades of the auditorium's lighting, electrical, theatrical, audio-visual and fire protection systems to be discreetly concealed behind historic finishes.

New York Landmarks Conservancy recognized SHCA's sensitive rehabilitation approach to PS 157 by granting the project its Lucy G. Moses Preservation Award. Additional project kudos include the Preservation League of New York State 2001 annual award.
