Use complementary materials and scale to integrate a new public school into a residential neighborhood, while also creating a supportive educational environment for children.
SHCA designed this new Early Childhood Center in a residential neighborhood across the street from famed Flushing Meadow Park.

The design of the two-story, 50,000 sq ft (4,645 sq m) building addresses the scale and character of the community while providing a compact, functional, and cost-efficient plan. The main entrance and lobby emphasize the connection from the street through to the playground, and the library is highlighted as a special circular feature.

The site was large enough to accommodate two playgrounds, one specifically for the smallest children, a 'quiet garden,' reading area outside the library, and combination cafeteria/multi-purpose room.

While the building is composed primarily of brick, the library walls are glass block, allowing additional light into the circular room. The cafeteria is lit from above by a playful pattern of round skylights. These rooms also enjoy a whimsical wall relief mural provided under the NYC Percent for Art program.
