To create a new, enlarged, sustainable facility designed to provide comfort and stability for families dealing with childhood illness.
Westchester Medical Center commissioned Swanke to design a new freestanding Ronald McDonald House on a site adjacent to their Marie Ferrari Children's Hospital.

The Ronald McDonald House is an international non-profit organization devoted to providing housing and other services to the families of children hospitalized with serious illnesses. Until recently, a small Ronald McDonald House facility was located within the WMC Children's Hospital. The new Ronald McDonald House is slightly over 15,000 sq ft on two floors. The functional space program consists of modern hotel style bedrooms, communal kitchens and dining areas, children's play rooms and other hospitality and social services programs. A large double height family living room with fireplace and glazing on two sides with enclosed exterior patio and garden serves as the focal point for the public spaces within the new structure. The exterior design evokes the image of a house, with pitched roofs and chimney. The interior design was completed with generous donations of finish items from Starwood Hotels & Resorts. The project is attaining a LEED Gold Rating.
