A 200,000 sq m (2,153,000 sq ft) mixed-use development integrating an office tower, retail shops and residential corridor within the city's central square, the project is an integral component in the urban renewal of Shymkent, a city in south-central Kazakhstan.
The site, framed by water to the south and a public theatre to the north, echoes the city's formal structure. This urban geometry inspired the designers' massing, tectonic and aesthetic approaches to the buildings.
A hierarchy of spaces breaks down the scale of the site, which is layered in section to create a meaningful sequence of "events" weaving together the disparate program elements.
'Movement' and 'centering' are crucial themes upon which the design strategy is based. These concepts were broken down and used at several different scales to unite the larger project. The scheme also activated the potential for further development that would move deeper into the city and transform the pedestrian experience.
